I got a lot of requests for specific prints this shop opening, and I’m afraid I wasn’t able to get to everyone. But I am keeping things in mind for the future.

I mentioned on Instagram that I wanted to share a few thoughts about being yourself as an artist. It’s something I’ve been simmering on for awhile, especially over the past 2+ years of working commercially on movie posters.

When I started my art career, I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t know what finding your style meant. People would say things like “it’s about being yourself” without elaborating. It drove me crazy.

Now, ten years in, I can say: It’s about being yourself. But more specifically, I think it’s about accepting yourself.

You don’t need to be amazing, special, or important to be accepted. Whoever you are is fine. Genuinely, truly, fine. It’s safe to be curious about who you really are.

There is a thorn here though: acceptance usually includes a little disappointment. You aren’t going to be as sick and rad as you wish you were. That’s okay. Let your idealized self be a North Star, not a destination.

When you embrace the idea that whatever you find within yourself will be good enough, your authenticity will feel safe to come out. Because it won’t be stepping into the blinding light of expectation.

Separating your effort from your value is much easier said than done. It’s a practice. Maybe I’ll write more about my experiences with that sometime.

But for now, I encourage anyone who wants to find their own creative voice to recognize and nurture the space between your efforts and your value. In that carefully crafted space, the odd and delicate creature of your style can come out to play.

Thanks for witnessing mine come out over the years. It means a lot.

More soon,
